Do I Need an ETIAS Electronic Travel Authority for EU Travel?
From mid-2025, European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is being introduced for travel around the EU and the Schengen zone.
If you're from one of the 68 countries that doesn't currently require a visa to visit EU countries, then you will need an ETIAS to enter from mid-2025 (expected launch date).
ETIAS is an EU scheme, but also allows travel to non-EU Schengen zone countries.
The Schengen zone comprises of 27 countries; 23 EU countries plus 4 EEA countries plus around 18 other countries that allow the use of Schengen visas to travel.
Currently Bulgaria, Romania and Cyprus are EU countries that are applied to join the Schengen zone. This may be completed by the time ETIAS is introduced.
Ireland is a member of the EU, but not a member of the Schengen zone and has not applied to join.
If you do need ETIAS then it is required to be allowed to check-in set off or enter any of the countries within the EU Schengen zone
With the introduction of ETIAS travellers into the EU Schengen zone, need to consider if they need a Visa, resident permit or a passport, when travelling across border, including a consideration of the length of their stay in short or longer.
If a stay is less than 180 days residence in country, then tax residence is not required during that year.
If an expat stays resident more than 183 days in a countries tax year, then they could be deemed tax resident and required to submit and file a tax return for that country.
