Part 3 - Are We in World War Cee?
In the 3rd article of this series ProACT Sam compares the current global view with other dramatic world-changing events in time.
How does the current Corona Crisis Compare with events in history?
Are we dealing with ‘World War C’? There can be no doubt that WWC will have a dramatic impact on how the world operates, but will it change fundamentals of how the world was before the Coronavirus outbreak?
Let’s take a look at the issue by giving it some perspective.
The impact of World War 1
100 years ago, in World War 1 saw the death of 2 million German soldiers and over 40 million casualties in total. It’s impact saw a whole generation of fighters and civilians wiped out between 1914 and 1918.
Spanish flu following WW1
That figure was then quickly exceeded by the Spanish flu, which lasted between 1918 and 1920. Spanish flu was a brand new virus to mankind. There were no antibodies, nor immunity in human beings and it spread rapidly around the world, infecting 500 million people and killing up to 50 million. A second devastating blow to the world post-WW1 and with another huge impact on cities and communities globally.
World War 2
All of this however, was dwarfed by World War 2. WW2 resulted in over 20 million deaths in China, over 24 million deaths in the Soviet Union and a total of over 60 million deaths worldwide, not just the 15 million military people, but 45 million civilians too.
What was the difference between the 30s and the post-WW2 era - as an example, many of today’s institutions on which the world is based were created, including the World Health Organisation, the EU and the United Nations.
Are we going to see the kind of changes we did post-WW2? Is it going to be like that?
The ‘Sacking of Rome’ in 410
The year 410 is infamously noted by the ‘sacking of Rome’. Rome was already down on its luck but the Roman Empire (known as the ‘civilised world’ as named by the Europeans because it was the only world they knew) had controlled much of Europe for centuries prior. However, the Visigoths ended the reign of the Roman Empire, succeeding in their invasion of the city. Gothic influence spread across Europe and heralded a time of massive change, from the classical era of Greece and Rome into the middle ages and medieval Europe.
Global response to the Coronavirus pandemic
Are we in for this level of change now with this pandemic crisis?
Organisations like the World Health Organisation (WHO) have created procedures and policies for governments around the world to implement in the event of a pandemic. This is what is happening right now, with variations on a common theme taking place all around the world, creating a lockdown situation to try to control the virus amongst humans.
We don’t know how it will impact longer term. The virus is not unrelated to the common cold but it is a new virus and so will have an effect (at varying levels) on everyone that contracts it.
What we’re now experiencing is a situation where effectively the economies of the world are being closed down. How is that going to impact both individuals and businesses Living and Working Abroad?
Quite dramatically, no doubt.
What we need to do first of all is to not get caught in mass-hysteria, but to look after ourselves, our families, our teams, our businesses and clients/customers, and to see where we go from there.
But what we should expect in our lifestyle as Expats (with businesses, overseas properties and families abroad) is that dramatic changes will result. You can see that happening already.
