Brexit Amid All the Politics

ProACT Sam highlights the Game of Thrones reoccurring activities and confirms what Expats can do to gain certainty.

The theatrics this week in the UK Brexit saga are all for show again.

While the EU ambassadors meeting agreed an EU extension Monday, the UK parliament carried on the games and rejected an election.

Why change their minds Tuesday?

Here’s why.

The EU 27 leaders are the only people that can unanimously agree a Brexit extension in a meeting.

The summit meeting ended 18/10/19.

There is not another summit meeting of leaders before Thursday’s 31st October - Brexit date.

The EU ambassadors were able to have the ‘meeting’ required under EU rules for the heads of state. They agreed unanimously to the extension Monday.

The EU 27 leaders could now agree the extension by email under EU rules before Thursday.

Again it has to be unanimous.

What appears to have happened behind the scenes is the UK government and EU commission have confirmed they have a withdrawal treaty signed and agreed to the UK MPs.

If not ratified by the UK parliament then Brexit would happen with no deal unless the UK gave the EU good reason for an extension ie a UK election.

The plan worked. Either the EU and UK would get their withdrawal treaty passed or no deal Brexit would occur.

Dither No Longer

While there is an extension to the Brexit date, there is no extension to the end of the transition period - the end of 2020.

EU expats relocating to the UK or the EU before Brexit day and end of transition can still register to be Living and Working Abroad.

Those EU Expats already Living and Working Abroad in UK and EU have the same timetable to secure their residency, business, working, property, healthcare and pension rights before the end of transition.
