How UK Expats Can Still Work in Cyprus: The 2026 Guide

Since Brexit, the rules for Brits moving to the Med have changed, but the dream is far from over. In 2026, UK citizens are "third-country nationals," which means you can no longer just show up and start a job.

However, there is a clear, legal path to living and working on the island—provided you follow the "Foreign Income" rule.

The Path: The Digital Nomad Visa

The most popular way for UK expats to work from Cyprus in 2026 is the Digital Nomad Visa. This allows you to reside on the island while continuing your career, provided your professional life remains anchored outside of Cyprus.

The Strategy for Brits:

  • The "Yes" List: You can work remotely for your UK employer, manage your UK Limited Company, or freelance for international clients (US, UAE, EU, etc.).

  • The "No" List: You cannot take a job with a local Cypriot company, and you cannot provide freelance services to any business or individual registered in Cyprus.

2026 Requirements for UK Citizens

The Cyprus government has expanded the nomad quota to 1,000 permits for 2026. To secure yours, you must meet these benchmarks:

  • Income: Prove a net monthly income of at least €3,500 (roughly £2,950) from sources outside Cyprus.

    • Note: If bringing a spouse, add 20% to this requirement; add 15% per child.

  • Proof of Remote Work: You'll need an employment contract or freelance service agreements explicitly stating you can perform your duties via telecommunications.

  • Clean Record: A fresh UK Criminal Record Certificate (ACRO).

  • Health: Private health insurance and a medical check-up (including blood tests) once you arrive in Cyprus.

Why Brits are choosing this route in 2026

Working "from" Cyprus rather than "for" Cyprus has a massive financial upside. By staying 183+ days, you can become a Non-Dom Tax Resident:

  • 0% Tax on Dividends: If you pay yourself via dividends from your UK company, you could pay zero tax on that income in Cyprus for up to 17 years.

  • Tax-Free Allowance: The first €22,000 of your salary is generally exempt from income tax.
