Global Jet Fuel Crisis: Summer Travel "Under Threat"
The biggest story of the week is the worsening jet fuel shortage following the prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz. As of this morning, aviation analysts are warning that European and Asian hubs have less than 21 days of fuel reserves left at current consumption rates.
The Disruption: Over 25,000 flights have already been axed for the May–June window. Carriers like Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, and AirAsia X have announced significant schedule reductions to preserve fuel.
The Cost: For expats planning summer trips home, "surge pricing" is now in full effect. Average long-haul fares are up 140% compared to this time last year.
Expat Tip: If your summer travel isn't "mission-critical," consider booking flexible tickets or holding off. If you must fly, check your airline’s "Fuel Surcharge" policy, as many are retroactively applying fees to existing bookings.
EU "Entry/Exit System" (EES) Full Roll-Out
The new digital border system is now live across the Schengen Area, and the first "real-world" reports from the weekend aren't great.
The Bottlenecks: Major hubs (Paris, Frankfurt, and Madrid) reported wait times of up to three hours for non-EU passport holders as biometric registration (fingerprints and facial scans) moved from pilot to mandatory.
The "Manual" Grace Period: France has requested a temporary extension for manual stamping at the Eurostar and ferry terminals to prevent "total gridlock" at the Channel crossings.
Oil Shortage Sparks Civil Unrest Across Europe
The fuel crisis isn't just affecting planes. A "second energy shock" is hitting the daily commute for expats in Europe and Southeast Asia.
Protests: Fuel-price protests have paralyzed traffic in parts of Ireland, Norway, and Thailand this week. In Ireland, the army was briefly called in to manage blockages at fuel depots.
Public Transport Shifts: Many cities are reporting a 20% spike in public transit use as expats ditch cars to avoid petrol prices that have hit record highs (averaging €2.45/liter in many EU capitals).
UK Transition to "eVisas" Reaches Final Phase
If you are an expat in the UK, your physical BRP (Biometric Residence Permit) is now officially a relic.
The Deadline: The Home Office confirmed this week that almost all physical documents will be invalid for travel by year-end.
The New ETA Fee: For friends and family visiting you in the UK, note that the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) fee rose to £20 on April 8. Ensure your visitors have their digital clearance confirmed before they head to the airport, as airlines are strictly enforcing "No ETA, No Boarding."
Thailand & Vietnam: New Residency Restrictions
Two major expat hubs in Southeast Asia have updated their entry rules this week in response to the regional energy and economic strain.
Thailand: Rumours are swirling about a potential scrap of visa-free entry for 36 countries to better "track and tax" long-term stayers.
Laos: Has introduced a strict 3-day reporting rule for all tourists and nomads entering the country, requiring digital registration of their exact location.
