Historical events that created social change
History is littered with examples of events that created great social change.
These events have included great political changes, economic changes, behavioural and technological changes.
Great historical events have also have impact on public heath:
The children’s song ‘ring a ring o’ roses’ is associated the Great Plague. It is thought the disease originated in China spreading to England in the mid 1300’s. Sadly, the disease took millions of lives, tens of thousands in London alone. The plague was thought to have ended in 1665. A year later, the Great Fire of London ravaged the city. An unintended consequence of the fire was the cleansing of London. Effectively, this tragic historical event became a ‘solution’ to another.
Internet technology and the ‘world wide web’ arrived 30 years ago. This historical development has subsequently led to a complete transformation of the way we live our lives from phones, to work, to shopping.
Approximately 10 years ago, a financial crash impacted worldwide economies, from which they are still struggling to recover.
Now we have a new worldwide pandemic in the coronavirus.
All of these past events generate sharp shocks to society and shepherded in significant change in the way we live our lives and do business.
The coronavirus is likely to usher in a rapid change in how society works - for business and workers and across borders.
Change always offers opportunity. There are no borders on the internet.
