How to get a diving licence in Cyprus

How do I get a driving licence in Cyprus?

To obtain a driving licence in Cyprus as an expat, you'll have to go through a process which typically involves the following steps:

Residency: You must be a resident in Cyprus to apply for a driving licence.

Exchange your Licence

If you have a driving licence from an EU/EEA member country or the UK, you can use it in Cyprus for up to six months after you establish residency.

After that, you must exchange it for a Cypriot driving licence. If you are from a non-EU country, the rules may vary, and it is recommended to exchange your licence as soon as possible.

Application

You can apply at any District Offices of the Department of Road Transport or Citizen Service Centres. The application for a driving licence must be made on a TOM 7 application form (view English guide), which can be obtained from these offices.

Documentation

You will need to provide the following documents:

  • Proof of identity (passport)

  • Proof of residency (visa, residence permit)

  • Your existing driving licence

  • A medical examination form TOM 153, completed by a doctor if you are over 70 years of age or applying for certain categories of vehicles

  • Driving Test: If you are not from the UK or an EU/EEA country, you may be required to take a theory and practical driving test. It's recommended to take driving lessons from an accredited driving school before taking the test.

  • Fees: You need to pay a fee for the issuance of the driving licence.

Once your application has been approved and the necessary tests passed (if applicable), you will receive your Cypriot driving licence. This licence is valid throughout the EU/EEA, and, like all EU driving licences, is a "credit card-style" licence with a photograph and possibly a microchip.

Cyprus Driving Licence Renewal Over 70 years

If you’re over 70 you will need to renew your driving licence in Cyprus every 3 years.

This can be done at a Citizen Service Centre (CSC), a Post Office CSC or the District Office of Transport Department.

Renewal could be done from 1 month before the expiry date.

For expats with Cyprus residency permits

If you’re over 70 a TOM 153 form must be printed and signed by your doctor before your appointment..

The driving licence renewal form is TOM 7 (view English guide) which needs to be prepared and taken to the CSC. This is only available in Greek.

When you are submitting your TOM 7 & TOM 153 at the relevant office, a photograph will taken for the the licence.

You could also get a printed photo taken before you go but this would need to be then certified by the local Muktar/ community leader.

ID documents are needed including:

  • Cyprus Resident Permit

  • Passport

  • 6 months of utility bills in the name of the driver

  • If a married or cohabiting partner has no utility bills then an affidavit is required and can be produced with the assistance of the CSC or a lawyer.

You will receive a receipt of successful renewal application of the driving licence. The new licence may take some time to be created and then be collected at a later date.
