Am I Eligible for Healthcare now the UK has left the EU?

ProACT Sam clarifies state healthcare post Brexit.

The UK left the EU Social and Healthcare agreement with Brexit.

This means that cross border reciprocal social welfare and health care are not as they were for expats.

The changes affect EU expats in the UK and UK expats in the EU.

There is no longer a reciprocal UK-EU agreement even though the UK operate a similar looking overseas health care arrangement with EHIC cards and S1.

Unless the UK a has a reciprocal agreement with your country of residence you don’t necessarily have the cross border state healthcare.

POST BREXIT HEALTHCARE

Retired expats, students or medically exempt people do qualify for an S1 which allows for reciprocal overseas state healthcare, if:

    1.    There is a bilateral health agreement

    2.    The EU/UK expat is legally resident in an UK/EU country before the end of 2020 and Brexit transition.  This applies even if the S1 is qualified for after the start of 2021 as long as the Expat remains legally resident in that country.

Otherwise Expats must qualify for state Healthcare by social/ national insurance contributions while Living and Working Abroad in their new country of residency.

If a country doesn’t have a state health system that is accessible then private healthcare is the answer.
