We sent out an advice for expats in the Gulf & wider region yesterday, if you haven’t read it you can read it here: proactpartnership.com/blog/iran-middle-east-escalation-practical-guidance-for-expatriates-in-the-gulf

Cyprus: Overnight Drone Strike on RAF Akrotiri

The most critical news this morning is the confirmed drone strike on the British Sovereign Base Area at RAF Akrotiri at midnight. This is the first direct attack on British military facilities in Cyprus in 40 years.

An Iranian-made Shahed-type drone, likely launched by Hezbollah in Lebanon, crashed into the base facilities, causing damage to the runway. While no casualties were reported, a second drone was intercepted by British defences. Families have been evacuated from the base, and non-essential personnel are being dispersed.

Paphos International Airport was temporarily evacuated this morning following reports of a drone threat, leading to widespread flight cancellations. President Christodoulides has convened the National Security Council, clarifying that the Republic of Cyprus is not a participant in the military operations but remains on high alert. Expect significant travel disruption across the island for the remainder of the week.

USA and Israel: Massive Air Campaign Against Iran

Following the escalation in the Mediterranean and Gulf, the United States and Israel launched a historic wave of airstrikes against Iran over the weekend.

The Pentagon has confirmed that over 1,000 targets have been hit so far, including warships and missile programs. Reports indicate that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in the strikes, and a new powerbroker, Ali Larijani, has emerged in Tehran.

This is not a one-off event; the White House suggests the campaign could last for weeks. The US military has reported its first three American casualties of the conflict, with several others injured during Iranian retaliatory strikes on Sunday.

UAE and Gulf States: The End of the Safe Haven Image

The long-held image of the Gulf as a "safe oasis" was shattered this weekend as Iranian retaliatory strikes reached the United Arab Emirates.

The Damage: Iranian drones and missiles targeted the UAE on Saturday, causing a fire at a resort in Dubai and debris-related damage near Abu Dhabi airport. Major airlines, including Emirates and Etihad, temporarily suspended operations, leaving thousands of European and international traveler’s stranded.

Beyond the physical threat, expats are facing a banking lockdown. Gulf financial institutions are under immense pressure to freeze assets linked to Iranian interests, leading to a massive increase in "Know Your Customer" (KYC) hurdles for all international transfers.

Qatar: Airspace Closed and Ballistic Interceptions

Qatar has officially closed its airspace and suspended all Qatar Airways flights following a major missile engagement over Doha.

The Qatari Ministry of Defence announced the successful interception of 18 ballistic missiles over the weekend. While the government maintains that the situation is stable and under control, Western embassies have issued "Shelter-in-Place" orders for their citizens.

For the thousands of expats using Doha as a transit hub or place of residence, the message is clear: do not travel. Non-essential embassy personnel have begun voluntary departures, and the regional maritime industry is reporting significant GPS signal degradation in Qatari waters, affecting shipping and yachting movements.

Saudi Arabia: Temporary Work Visa Suspension

In a sudden move linked to the regional security situation, Saudi authorities have implemented an immediate suspension of Temporary Work Visas (TWVs) for several nationalities.

Effective immediately, passport holders from 17 countries—including India, Pakistan, Egypt, Turkey, and Jordan - are no longer being issued short-term work permits. This is causing significant disruption for projects relying on rapid workforce mobilisation.

The UK Foreign Office has updated its travel advice, recommending that British nationals in Saudi Arabia stay at home due to reported missile activity in the region. If you are an expat currently in the Kingdom, ensure your "Stay at Home" supplies are ready and monitor local defence sirens.

🗣️ ProACT Sam Says: A Path to Calm

In times of regional friction and shifting regulations, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. But remember, clarity is the best antidote to anxiety. We are here to provide the steady hand you need to stay settled and secure.

Here is your "Calm & Compliant" checklist for the week:

  1. Safety is Your Foundation: If you are in the Gulf, prioritise your immediate well-being. Follow official guidance, stay informed, and keep your essentials organised. Knowing you are prepared allows you to stay calm even when the headlines are alarming.

  2. Compliance is Your Shield: Whether it is the new "Tax for All" filing in Cyprus or the updated KYC rules in the UAE, being correctly registered is how you protect your lifestyle. When your paperwork is in order, you remove the "what ifs" from your financial life.

  3. Secure Your Future Early: Don’t let the April 6th UK Pension deadline become a last-minute stress. Taking care of your Class 2 contributions now means you can tick that box and move on, knowing your retirement is on track at the best possible rate.

We are living through a period of change. My team and I are here to handle the complexity for you, so you can enjoy the Mediterranean sun or the Gulf skyline with absolute confidence.
